PHARMACY SERVICES Pharmacists (sometimes called chemists) are experts on medicines and how they work. You can buy various medicines from Pharmacies or Chemist shops, but for some medicines will need authorisation from your doctor. When you need to take medication your doctor or perhaps your dentist will give you a prescription to take to a Pharmacist to obtain your medicine. A charge is payable for National Health Service (NHS) prescriptions but you may be entitled to free prescriptions if you are: Under 16 Aged 16-18 in full time education Aged over 60 Pregnant or a nursing mother In an NHS Low Income Scheme Suffering from certain long term illnesses or disabilities Prescribed contraception Have an exemption certificate. You can also search on www.nhs.uk/england/pharmacies and follow the ‘Find your local Pharmacy’ link. Pharmacists can also give advice on some minor illnesses such as: Aches and pains Minor injuries Stomach upsets Women’s health Skin conditions Allergies Colds and flu They provide a wide range of services related to health issues.
